Keeping Your Braces Clean

Posted .

If you are getting braces, you may wonder how you are going to brush your teeth through all those wires and brackets. Well, believe it or not, you can. In fact, since braces give food debris, plaque and bacteria places to hide, brushing and flossing will be more important than ever.

When you get your new braces, one of our orthodontistss, Drs. Tyler Jolley, Elliot Jolley and Zachary Pitcher will talk to you about how to take care of your new dental work. We also have some tips for brushing your teeth while you have your braces on. You may have heard that you need to brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes at a time. However, with braces, you will need to up your game. You need to plan on brushing your teeth after every meal and snack, and you will have to spend a little more time than normal. Brush slowly, focusing on one or two teeth at a time. But remember to wait thirty minutes after you eat, to give your saliva time to neutralize the acids in your mouth and prevent damage to your teeth.

Rinse your mouth to remove any loose food particles. Start with your upper teeth, and then your lower teeth. First, brush along your gum line. Then brush from your gums the down to the brackets, and then from the brackets downs. Brush along your wires, and then rinse again to make sure you remove any food particles you may have loosened while you were brushing. You might find flossing a little difficult with your dental work. If regular dental floss proves too troublesome, you may want to try a water flosser, floss pick or floss threader.
